The Crazy Car and Tech Expo

I am not that into cars, don’t get excited seeing many of them (Jaguar is an exception) or drool when people talk about speed, etc. This year however, I went to the Autocar Expo which showcases some of the most awesome cars and bikes across India. Of course, I had a hidden agenda here, the Stuff Gadget show was also in the same premise, the very lovely Mrs works for the magazine and hence would not miss it for the world.

We started off early to avoid the mad crowds, got to the venue by about 10:30. As soon as I walked in, the first thing that caught my eye were custom bikes – a company called Verdanci – I had seen their work before online, but was very impressed with the quality of bikes they were making. As a promotion activity, they had decided to build a bike at the expo and launch it on the last day. I spoke to one of the promoters there and he told me the bikes cost anywhere between 5-10 lakhs basis customer requirement – a bit expensive if you ask me, but then again, the bikes look kick ass! Further on, there were more bikes – BMWs to start with – they look like cheetahs ready to pounce, I quickly took a few shots and then moved towards the cars…. the first few Porsches, Audis, Mercedes – while I was shooting the Porsche, a gentleman approached me and asked me for my email, he apparently forgot his batteries on his Nikon and wanted pictures of the event; this was a first for me also so I happily obliged (just sent him all the pics last week). Moving on, I stopped at the Jaguar booth for about 10 minutes and just stared at the car, that is one car that I would love to own in my life :-). Post the foreign cars, there were the standard India brands on display; what impressed me was how they had setup their booths and were rallying people around with contests, pictures, etc., something international brands definitely need to learn.

Moving further, reached the Ducati booth, 4 monsters parked there, that’s about it no flash lights, no booth babes, nothing – just 4 bikes and it was spectacular – these are monsters, not ordinary bikes. Post these, I did catch a glimpse of a Harley, but the crew there was rather unfriendly, they had issues if people came close to their bikes, so I said thanks but no thanks and moved on. By now, I was getting impatient as I had not yet reached the Stuff enclosure, I quickly asked someone and he directed me towards it. On my way there, caught a glimpse of some awesome car systems – they looked like they are straight out of The Fast & Furious… beautiful. Just before the Stuff enclosure, I ran into the Bat Mobile, well not really the Bat mobile but the Lamborghini Aventadore – hands down the greatest car that I will ever see in my life time – pity the Lamborghini booth was very small and restricted movement for Photography.

Finally made it to the Stuff enclosure – the walkway towards the expo was lit up and paintings of movies with gadgets lined the walls, my favourite the Godfather and the Guitar on display; from there the first store I caught was the LG TV booth. People! the booth babes in there looked like aunties, but the products on display pretty much killed it. The Stuff gallery had Bruce Lee guarding it and had some really fancy Lomo cameras, speakers, television and video game rigs on display; talking about rigs, the car simulator was suspended 4 feet off the ground and moved basis the steering wheel, please note even the screen moved giving the user a visual like none other. There were people riding Segues, trikes around the area and the sound system on display were to die for, they cost a crore+ so yes to die for. The mandotory smartphone displays drew in crazy crowds. I did hear a rumour that the Iphone 5 was going to be made available for display, but did not end up confirming the same. Another interesting toy/gadget was qaudrocopter or A.R Drone. It was in this huge enclosure and was being flown around by some very talented kids, it moved in all directions and could hover seamlessly in one place. After all the gadget porn, I went to meet the Mrs and all her collegues at the show. As usual, they were all working tirelessly for days but greeted me with a smile and offered to take me for a whole lot of demos, etc. I politely refused, have one policy in life if I can’t buy it, I don’t try it. After exchanging pleasantries, I decided it was time to leave, I had had a late night due to a kickass office party.

Going out, I noticed car companies had created drag, dirt and mountain tracks for people to try. There were also ATVs available to ride, honestly I was very impressed with the setup. All in all, it was a great experience. I definitely look forward to the Stuff show next year, Autocar may be but only for Photography. DO check our slide show for all the pictures from both the expos and don’t forget to favourite the blog 🙂

Rocking The Blues

Our fascination with the guitar started about 8 years back, a friend of mine used to play and loaned me an acoustic guitar to learn. We took it up rather seriously considering we did not have much to do at that time, bought a few expensive guitars picked up tab books and started listening to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen and other guitar virtuosos. I would like to believe that we were very good at playing the guitar, but in reality we sucked big time, could barely play a few phrases and even those were played in some whack timing…..anyways, post a few years of playing, life took over and we pretty much forgot about playing the guitar.

So why am I telling you this? Well, post our very eventful birthday in October, we have rediscovered playing the guitar. We also got a brand new acoustic guitar and started learning the instrument the correct way. This time around, we decided not to go the rock way, instead basis our love affair with the blues, we decided to learn the style. I do believe I have learnt more in the last month alone than I had learnt playing for 3 years; The reason is simple – better learning tools, the Internet and the fact that I am older and things are slowing down. Learning an instrument can’t be hurried, the slower you go the better it gets.
If like us you are into the blues he are some awesome tips to pick up this awesome style –
  1. Listen to the blues, learn to appreciate the music….if you don’t like the style you can’t play it.
  2. Start off with popular music: Eric Clapton, B.B King, Muddy Watters and so on. Don’t jump the gun…. Buddy Guy, Hubert Summlin, Howlin Wolf will come later…you need to develop a liking for the blues first.
  3. Start with the absolute basics, a 12 bar progression and then the minor pentatonic scale.
  4. Find a great teacher online or offline. There are few self taught guitarist in this world. Always learn from someone who knows better – we recommend Guitarjamz.com.
  5. Always use a metronome or a drum machine. If you have a smartphone or a tablet, there are dozens of free apps available for the same.
  6. Convert whatever you want to learn into an exercise. Play it ridiculously slow and don’t speed it up until you can play it in your sleep.
  7. Watch Cadillac Records and Nothing but the Blues.
  8. If you are playing the guitar for the first time, we would recommend you go in for an acoustic cut away. This will help you build strength in your hand and also ensure you can play beyond the 12th fret.
Take it from us playing the blues or any other style will take time and will require you to invest a fair bit of it. To start off, try 15 minutes in a day, but if you want to get any good let it go up to at least an hour. Don’t give up if things don’t come naturally, eventually you will pick it up. Playing the blues is probably the most relaxing part of the day and will definitely put a smile on your face. Hopefully, our post will inspire you to pick up the guitar or fall in love with it all over again. Check out some awesome videos to get you started and inspired below :-). If you have some crazy bluesy riff, share it with us in the comments below.

Food & More Food

Gujrati Thali Rocks!!!

So by now, most of you who have been reading our blog know that we are obsessed with Bikes, Movies, Gaming & Good Food!!! This post is more or less a tribute to the good food part and is basis the awesomeness which has been eaten in the past 2 weeks 🙂

David & Goliath Papad Style 🙂

CupCakes

So a couple of weeks ago, Ekta & me from work went to Bhagat Tarachand  where we ate some awesome Gujju style Thali. As you can see in the picture above, it was pretty damn crazy! We also ordered some masala papad and khichiya’s :-). The overall experiance was decently phenomenal!!! Another day, over the weekend we decided to go to Soul Fry Casa and ate some awesome prawns, crab, chicken & naans; this meal was the breakthrough variety as Mihir & I have been allergic to Shellfish & some other seafood, but after eating the meal here nothing happened in terms of allergies.

One fine day at home & this is post Rachita & Ritika’s shopping escapades at Crawford Market, my wife decided to make cupcakes and ice them using fondant which was like super cool! Not only did she make some awesome cupcakes but covered them with all these cool & cute designs using fondant the same was absolutely and totally exceptional :-). Another day, we decided to eat Ceaser Salad and Mushrooms on Toast; the same was accompanied by Carrot Soup with Cheese Balls! The Mushrooms on toast were made like the ones you get in Goa, sauted in butter and garlic which is totally super duper yummy. Going with the fillings on toast bit, we also made some awesome american corn in white sauce with barbecued onions and chilli sauce…

Mushrooms on Toast!!!

Crazy Tiffin!!!

Giant Puri’s

Now the part in office, where Mother in Law sent across a tiffin for lunch with a meal fit for kings. Just to give you a perspective, there was Roti, Panner veggie, Black Daal, Sliced Onion & Chilli, Papad (3 kinds, no less!) pickle! Yup! Unbelivable but true, after eating so much you just cant work! One fine day from work we (Rachita & me) went to the mall where we ate some Chole Bhatura which is basically chick peas made in a gravy and add to that 2 giant puri’s (deep fried) as you can see in the picture below. Further to the same, we revisited Soul Fry Casa with Ekta got drunk on Boondi (Self invented, our Rum Based Cocktail) & Watermelon Martini. Watched a few movies like Avengers which is hands down the bestest movie ever! Also saw The Cabin in the Woods which is one crazy-ass twisted movie. In Hindi movies, saw Jism 2 which is so seriously bad it ain’t funny; also saw Ek Tha Tiger wherein Salman Khan rocked, though the movie was only decent. Watched the entire season 4 of Fringe & started Game of Thrones which is totally unbeleivable!!! Finally, played Sleeping Dogs on the Xbox360 & did some general chilling with Vishal, Beers & Rum!!! Interesting 2 weeks if i say so myself 😉

Yummmmmmmyyyyy!!!

Bike Ride Revisited, Cookies & Pizzas

Sensational Marine Drive

Our Black Beauty!!!

Saturday started off with a rare and early morning bike ride… Rare basis the rains wherein this time around in the country it is the monsoon season & thus due to consistent rains in the city, bike rides are few & far between. There are people who do ride in the rains, though Mihir & I totally refrain from the same….. to each his own, I say… Coming back to the bike ride – an amazing feeling when you just start the engine, put the bike into gear and start cruising; somehow, even after a break you just feel like the bike is a part of you and the feeling is unmatched. A bit like cycling – you never forget how to ride it 🙂 .

Fortunately, the weather was kind…… actually, the weather was spectacular….. roads were dry, nice wind, the sun was under a cloud cover & all that jazz. Started by riding through my lane & then ventured to ride towards Worli Seaface. Passing Peddar Road & then Haji Ali which is my most favorite stretch to ride past was an amazing feeling, then went upto Worli Seaface where the wind was strong & at times felt the push of the same across the bike. From there, decided to go back as there was a slight drizzle which had started, though by the time I reached the Race Course, the weather was clear again. Decided to then continue the feeling of non stop riding & rode towards Marine Drive which was super awesome! Went to Nariman Point & back home. The brilliance of open roads matched only with the experiance of riding next to the sea was super cool!!!

Yummmyyyyy!!!

Awesome Cookies Courtesy the Mrs!!!

Got home, finished morning chores and then decided to head out for lunch with Mihir, Rachita, Yooti & Mother-in-law a.k.a. JKD. The cuisine to be eaten was Chinese & the place agreed upon was Asia 7 at the Palladium,  Phoniex Mills. Went there did a bit of window shopping & then went and ate some awesome food. Had some raw Papaya Salad, soup which had a distinct thai flavour (coconut milk base), some awesome mushroom starter followed by Rice & some Vegeteable Gravy. The place is a bit steep but definitely worth a visit. Went home & crashed. Though, while I was asleep, the very lovely Mrs baked some awesome cookies; woke up to sensational visuals & smells of the same. Cookies were vanilla, Chocolate & Chocolate with a soft center of Chocolate Truffles… Also Yooti had made some great Apple & Orange Sangria which was drunk through the evening by Vishal, Mihir & yours truly :-). The brilliant evening was then ended with Tacos and the Chocolate soft center Truffle Cookie for Dessert. Also, watched the animated movie Arjun which is a Disney movie though made by Indian companies like Tata Elixi & Reliance. The movie’s look & feel was breathtaking & the story captivating. I highly recommend the same to all.

More Yummyness!!!

Pesto & Jalapeno Pizza!!!

Stuffed Crust Pizza!!!

Sunday started off with Astro’s walk, bath & breakfast, post which the day was spent lying on bed watching movies. Saw a movie called The Philly Kid to start the day, loved the tag line of the film which said “To be out he had to be in”. The movie on the whole was decent & worth a watch. 2nd movie watched was Hijacked, starring UFC legend Randy “The Natural” Courture….. total wall paper movie which had its moments :-). Also ordered some wood-oven pizzas from this local joint called Govinda which is a restaurant run by the ISKON Hare Rama Hare Krishna Trust. The food was decent, though my suggestions if you ever order from there please re-heat the pizzas before eating… Finally, to end the amazing weekend, saw The Journey to The Mysterious Island starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Full on on entertainment movie. After that saw an episode of True Blood and finally passed out…

The Sensational Extended Weekend

Quick background – we had all planned to go to Pune for the weekend and in anticiapation taken Friday off. To our dissapointment, on Wednesday we heard that our Pune trip was hijacked by the senior citizens & we wouldn’t be going after all. Post multiple levels of mental mustarbation, we were clear that the Party was going to happen and that we were gonna have a super time at Peddar road (in-laws house) which was going to be empty for the next few days. Important note: the inlaws had hijacked the Pune trip!

View From the Party Pad!

Budweiser Strong Magnum

So Thursday evening’s when the party began: in-laws place with Kingfisher Strong and lots of fun! We also called Aashay in Pune and & asked him to get to Bombay ASAP. He agreed to come on Friday so that was sorted. Also then we decided to smoke up which was totally insane. Post being ravenously hungry we devoured some awesome pasta & roasted potato mash made by the lovely Mrs. It was also clearly decided that we were going to be at peddar road for the next 2 days for which we needed supplies. Multiple lists were made basis food & alcohol, the same was ordered from Godrej Natures Basket. Food consisted of Meat, Cold Cuts & Mince; the Alco had Budweiser Red, Magnum, Murphy’s Stout & also Stella, and some Sula wine as well. We also had Royal Salute Whiskey & Grey Goose at home so then we were sorted for the next 2 days.

Awesome Kheema!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Friday morning began with getting supplies home and also consuming the same :-). Lunch was ordered from Mumbai Kitchen, which was spectacular! On the order there was Chicken, Steak, Burgers & Hot Dogs. By evening Aashay & his cousin, Aniruddh, were in and that’s when the party kicked into topgear. We also went and ordered a bottle of Teachers as we didn’t want the Royal Salute to get over during our binge sessions. Also need to add here that one of our friends bunked work half day and joined us for lunch and general chilling through the day. One of the best days ever! So much catching up with everyone, at the same time everyone piss drunk and crazy amounts of fun!

Saturday morning with Ekta & Goo (Goo’s the Royal Enfield Classic bike owned by Ekta)…… actually Friday & Saturday morning we were on the bike cruising past Nariman point, Marine drive also covered Worli Seaface. Post that, on Saturday went to meet Chottubhai to get some minor tweaks done on the bike. This is the moment we stumbled on the picture for a D-grade movie…..so took a picture for the blog……….. thought it was damn funny! Got home post that & devoured some brilliant Chicken Kheema Rolls, Bacon & Churizo Ham made by Rachita, then the drinking continued in the afternoon. Aashay, Ekta & me made a ginger, apple, lemon flavored vodka cocktail in a pitcher (actually Aashay made it) went through that, then decided to have a vodka chilli shot which had Ekta & Aashay running around the room in a frenzy! Evening continued in a super duper chilled zone with everyone and we ordered in Pizzas so life was like totally sorted. Post dinner & general zoning went home & crashed. We also made our own home made Bong which was the Ulti Baka moment…… actually Ekta made the Bong so it was Ulti Bakudi moment…

This is too much fun!!!

Best Dessert Ever!!!

Bike Ride View!

Sunday morning went on a bike ride past the lanes in my area and across chowpatty, then went to Peddar Road to clean up the place considering the in-laws were going to be back; so went there, sorted a bit of it and decided to move the party to my residence. Waffles were eaten for lunch, post which Aashay & Aniruddh left for Pune & the rest of us decided to watch movies. Please note we were smoking up through the day I mean that was kinda “obvio buddy”. So the 1st movie we saw was the sequel to Pirahana 3D, Pirahana 2 in 3 D which featured a generous amount of Boobs and was like a lot of fun. Then we watched This Means War which was a chick flick with a FBI secret agent love triangle angle, post which we watched 21 Jump Street which was a fun movie. For dinner Cold Cuts – Turkey & Ham Sandwiches which were out of this world. Finally ended the day with a super dessert by Rachita and watching a couple of episodes of Supernatural.

This extended weekend was probably one of the greatest times we all had and will never forget. The usual Suspects – Vishal, Rachita, Ekta, Mihir, Yooti, Aashay, Aniruddh & Anu! Ulti fun people… We so need to do this again, like Defo Dude!!!

The Rainy Weekend

Crazy Rains!!!

This week was the rains, so no bike ride happened 😦 bummer… Primarily, the monsoons here in India, specially in Bombay, aren’t conducive to bike riding; there is decent amount of water logging, also traffic’s a bitch and roads are as slippery as icy glaciers… Having said that, if you are planning on getting your bike out during the rains, whether out of choice or duress, some basics you need to keep in mind. (Also images are not of the weekend but of past rains and how they are a problem year on year)

Damn thats a bad situation

1) Have your tyres checked for the right amount of air

2) Get tyres with better grip for the rains

3) Buy a good windcheater or raincoat

4) A good cover for the bike

5) Get all the metal work plated so that there is no rusting or corrosion

6) Have a tool box & first aid box handy so that in an emergency, if at all, you are equipped

7) Have the engine oil and brake oil also thoroughly checked

8) Carry a dry towel or napkin at all times

Moving on, Friday evening was generally an easy one wherein Rachita & me watched some serial on TV, had a nice Family dinner & closed the day. Also it had been a tough day at work so didn’t do much even though it was a Friday. Saturday morning started off with a bang, having my favorite cold coffee with some super bailey’s irish cream and chocolate sauce (Recipe for the same below). Also, as mentioned, no bike ride happened basis rains, so then decided to watch movies and chill through the day – pulled out the entire Bourne series from my collection; the POA was clear then to laze & go through movies & eat awsome food.

The Bourne Trilogy!!!

For people who don’t know, the Bourne series is about Jason Charles Bourne (born David Webb), a fictional character and the protagonist of a series of novels by Robert Ludlum and subsequent film adaptations. He first appeared in the novel, The Bourne Identity (1980), which was adapted for television in 1988. The novel was very loosely adapted in 2002 into a feature film under the same name and starred Matt Damon in the lead role. The character has appeared in eight sequel novels (the last six were written by Eric Van Lustbader) with another due to be published in 2012. Along with the first feature film, The Bourne Identity (2002), Jason Bourne also appears in two sequel movies, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), both with Damon again in the lead role. A fourth film, The Bourne Legacy, is due to be released in 2012 but will not star Damon – the concept & story is about a black-ops agent gone rogue against the corrupted government system.

Gimme some Dimsum 🙂

Post the marathon movie session, awesome dinner cooked by Rachita was had. She made some awesome dimsum/momos & rice noodles with chinese greens which were totally spectacular! Sunday morning started getting the bike cleaned, though, couldn’t go for a ride as the rains were just not letting up. Spent the entire day lazing in bed, watching serials. Finished Vampire Diaries season 3 which was super fun! There is no one more cooler than Damon played by Ian Somerhalder… Again for dinner, Rachita made some awesome Omelet Pav I(Omelet Bread) which was the greatest in the world! In the posts through the week, I will be sharing the recipe for the same and also an interesting article on why this preparation is so iconic. Finished the day watching Supernatural and finally called it a day.

Greates Omele Pav Ever!!!

Cold Coffee Irish Style Recipe Below

Cold Irish Coffee!!!

1) Some cold milk & some good instant coffee.

2) Add some sugar to the same and drop the same in the mixer.

3) Post mixing the same, add 30 ml of bailey’s irish cream to the mix & give it another stir.

4) Finally top the mix with a generous helping of chocolate sauce.

5) The super duper coffee is ready.

Unusual Motorcycles

Every now and then you will see a motorcycle on the road and go “WOW! That’s an awesome looking piece of equipment!” People queue up outside showrooms or expos to see motorcycles that have been created basis themes or brands. We have always been fascinated with unusual bikes; hence one of our favourite pastimes is customizing our bike and also watching the Biker Build Off.

To add to the above, Movies, Games and various other brands are also promoting their products using Motorcycles; a classic example of the same – Batman, Gears of War, Tron Motorcycles, etc.. The Gears of War Bike was actually designed by Paul Junior Designs; the wheels of the game-inspired trike include the Gears of War cog skull symbol and the paint resembles armour used in the game. It features crash bars to fight locusts, dual gattling guns and 14 inch wide tires. Check the video below for the unveiling.

The Batpod, on the other hand, is a totally different ball game (we will be covering this in another post). Designed by Nathan Crowley, who designed the Tumbler for Batman Begins (2005), the bike has 20″ front and rear tires (the Tumbler’s front wheels), and is powered by a high-performance, water-cooled, single-cylinder engine, geared toward the lower end for faster acceleration and with no exhaust pipes. The exhaust is routed through the hollow steel/aluminum/magnesium tubing used for the frame of the bike. The Batpod is steered by the shoulders instead of hands, and the rider’s arms are protected by shields. The two foot pegs are set 3½ feet apart on either side of the tank, which the rider lies on, belly down.

The Tron Bike is by far, my most favourite bike, purely on the way it looks and also the way it is showcased in the movie. Electroluminescent strips built into the tire cowlings, wheel rims and body illuminate the cycle. It is powered by a fuel-injected Suzuki 996cc, 4-stroke engine. Riders lay at a near-horizontal position astride the padded leather seat, with feet on foot pegs that control its 6-speed constant mesh manual transmission and hands on the handlebars for throttle and braking. The hubless wheels are former truck tires built up, then custom-shaped to fit onto one of two counter-rotating rims spinning within each other, providing the broad-tired authenticity of the computer cycles from the movie. A chain-driven friction drum manages acceleration and braking from the handlebars. It uses a 3 1/2-gallon main fuel tank and 1 1/4-gallon reserve tank. Check the awesome video below.

I thought it would be fun to put down some Unusual facts on Motorcycles in this post, some of them you already know some will make you go WTF….

The German inventor, Gottlieb Daimler, is generally credited with building the first practical motorcycle in 1885.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that in 2000, 631 motorcyclists were saved by wearing their helmet.

Motorcycles and scooters are, on average, about twice as fuel efficient as cars.

Up to eight motorbikes can fit in the same parking space occupied by one car.

Kawasaki also makes spaceships.

The first rider to ever go over 300 mph was Don Vesco in 1975, on a 1496cc Yamaha-engined streamliner.

MV Agusta is currently producing the F4 1078 RR 312. 312kph being the recorded top speed at the Salt Flats in Utah in 2007.The RR312 reached a recorded top speed of 195, but since speeds are averaged, it’s recorded top speed is 194mph, or metric, 312kph.

The fastest motorcycle is the Dodge Tomahawk, a prototype with an unusual design, featuring the 500 hp (373 kW) 8.3 L V10 engine from the Dodge Viper.(Picture: theRed Bull Bike)

Harley-Davidson built push-bikes between 1917 and 1923. The first Harley Davidson motorcycle, built in 1903, used a tomato can for a carburettor.

When Valentino Rossi was five, his dad Graziano built him a go-cart to discourage him from getting into bikes.

By now you must have realized why the unusual works. Below is a bunch of interesting, unusual motorcycle facts and some awesome imagery for your eyes only. As with all our posts, if you have an unusual bike and an image to share, do add the link in the comments section.
