Vintage Weekend

This weekend was more or less governed by a lot of activity. Also, I realized that it had been over 2 weeks since I put up a post & much was overdue. This weekend started off with an awesome motorbike ride, then general guitar playing in the morning, post which we (Ekta, Rachita & me) went to Oh! Calcutta & had some awesome seafood – there was fried fish, steamed fish, awesome naans and some superb daal, etc. which was eaten. The evening was spent visiting the super car show at Mahalakshmi racecourse followed by alcohol & home made burgers which were spectacular. Also, what deserves a mention & please to note there will be a more detailed post on the same is the start of our own little business called Out of the Trinket Box – http://outofthetrinketbox.wordpress.com/ serving awesome cakes, cupcakes & more. Our 1st order delivered is as below “Hulk Cupcakes!”

Sunday morning started off with a bike ride towards Nariman Point, though on the way, parked right opposite the Trident (what used to be The Oberoi) were some awesome Vintage Cars! So I parked my bike next to them, and decided to have a look; post further probing, I realised that the same were gathering there as part of a Vintage Car Rally with over 100 cars taking part so I decided to hang there for a bit & take some pics & videos. After a while, there were a few Royal Enfields & Bajaj Avengers that came in which were also going to be a part of this rally.

Super Awesome

Super Awesome

Saw a few women riders beyond Ekta for the 1st time riding Royal Enfields. There were Cadillacs, Mercedes,  Mini Coopers, Triumphs, Dodges, Aston Martins, Buicks, cars which looked like Archie’s Jalopy, Rolls-Royce & many more. Also, the cool part here was that the accumulated crowd was allowed to go near the cars, see the interiors, click photographs & all without any issue from the owners; some of the owners were more then happy to talk about their cars to the fans inquiring. Later on, once the place was filled with cars & people, there was a roaring sound like thunder which turned everyone’s heads towards Air India building as the sound came from that direction. En route towards the starting point of the rally came in the Harley Riders, only about 3 of them, though they sounded like an army. Immediately, everyone’s attention switched to these awesome bikes. I also checked them out, contemplated in my head a lot about buying one, though then finally got onto my Bajaj Avenger & rode back home. I am going to try & put up images of the rally in a slide show below this post.

Sensational Cadillac

Got home all excited, showed Rachita & Mihir the pictures of the rally, spent time with Astro, watched Stargate Atlantis. Also watched a crazy movie called Upsidedown which has an amazing concept – 2 Worlds circulating a single sun with opposite gravitational forces connected to each other, so in effect people in world 1 see the people in world 2 inverted & people cannot travel to opposite worlds otherwise they wont survive for more than 30 minutes, pretty trippy I tell you. Post a full-on family lunch, I passed out for a bit, woke up & decided to go for a random joyride with Rachita towards worli seaface to see the Worli Festival, got home went for a bike ride again past peddar road & marine drive, felt super cool about the same :-), got home had some super JD (Jack Daniels i.e.), ordered-in pizzas & watched a super comedy called Here comes the Boom to end the day and a super weekend. Don’t forget to check the awesome photographs of some crazy vintage cars!!!

The Super Chinese Brunch & More

About a week ago, Ritika & I were planning to meet up on a Sunday; during a random discussion we were having, we decided to go have duck & that’s when we zeroed in on Vong Wong, one of my most favorite Chinese restaurants in South Bombay. Before I forget, on Saturday, the day before we went to Vong Wong, Rachita, Ekta & me visited Smooth, a lounge at Shalimar Hotel at Kemps Corner. This was the 1st time Rachita & me went to this place. Details of both these places & our awesome experience there follows…

Smooth!!!

Caipirojka & Watermelon Martini

Saturday morning started off with a bike ride past Marine Drive & Nariman Point. The morning was then spent strumming the guitar & playing NBA2K13 on the Xbox360. Ekta & me decided to go get drunk in the afternoon & were trying to figure where we should go for the same. Also, we were looking at trying out a new place, so post a bit of thinking, I decided on this place which I had heard about during my work days at Hungama called “Smooth”, located at Hotel Shalimar at Kemps Corner. We decided to head there at about 1 p.m. On entering the place, I was pleasantly surprised as the the look & feel of the same was pretty damn snazzy.

This be Smooth!!!

The decor was sofas & chairs in silver with white coloured walls which looked very cool. For a Saturday afternoon, the place was surprisingly empty & when i say empty there was 3 of us and the staff …. which worked well for us :-). The menu also had a great mix of food & lot of choice around alco… For food we ordered some starters which were pretty damn good & for the drinks we ordered some fruit flavored Martini’s & Caipirojka’s. Post having a couple of those, Ekta decide she wanted to have Rum, Thumbs Up & I decided to have a Bloody Marry followed by some Johnny Walker Red Label… Yup! By now we were pretty damn high / shit faced, came home & crashed. If you guys are looking at a place to hang through the afternoon which is not very noisy then Smooth is ideal; also evening is when this place gets decently crowded. Pretty well priced also for the drinks as well as food…

Best Brunch Spread Ever!!!

Yummmmy!!!

Moving onto Sunday & the brunch at Vong Wong with Ritika, Mihir, Yooti, Ekta & yours truly. Ekta & me decided to ride to Nariman point where the restaurant is located, Rachita & Ritika were out shopping at Crawford market & were joining us directly, while Mihir & Yooti took a cab. Considering it was afternoon, the weather wasn’t ideal for a bike ride but what the heck, we were totally kicked about it as we were dressed like we were in Goa & were living the same experience on the bike!!! Reaching Vong Wong, we realized they had a buffet brunch going on which was priced at about Rs 2000/- a pop with unlimited cocktails. After doing some mental math, we decided to go for the same & make the most of the food as well as the cocktails & mocktails…

Awesomeness!!!

Before I get into the awesomeness of the cocktails & super duper food, let me tell you about the ambiance of this place. The same is pretty classy, the furniture has an authentic feel; there are these giant Chinese vases, also the restaurant is very spacious and if you are a big group of people then you can book the round tables which have curtains to enclose the space & give you privacy; there are 3 tables of this sort. Also, the bar is amazing & most importantly, the view is absolutely stunning as it looks into the sea, past Nariman Point & what used to be the Oberoi Hotel which now is the Trident Hotel.

Sensational!!!

It Doesn’t Get Any Better…

Now for the food & drinks! We immediately ordered some caipirojka & some martini’s to start off with…….. the agenda, clearly, was to try all the cocktails on offer and get shitfaced, atleast Ekta & me had decided the same. Starters were served on the table – there was chilli chicken, momo’s / dim sum (5 different kinds – pork, vegetable, chicken, pakchoy and mushroom), crispy vegetables in a spicy wasabi, etc.  There were some awesome salads like Som Tam, Kimchi, tofu & french bean salad, absolutely sensational stuff! There were 3 live counters serving, make to order eggs i.e. omelets, poached eggs & eggs benedict; there was also a khao suey counter which was the hands down the best we have eaten & a counter serving duck rolls with plum sauce which was super yummy!!! There was this guy who was strumming the guitar & singing songs on request which added to the overall experience. This guy’s singing had an amazing voice at least Ekta & Ritika thought so… Another cool thing they had on offer during brunch was shots & to take that experience to the next level they had this waiter & waitress come to your table get you to open your mouth stuff it with Watermelon, Magic pops and then pour in loads of Grey Goose vodka which was the highlight :-). Post going through all of this & a crazy amount of dessert, we moved to some exotic fruit cocktails – those also were delicious & exceedingly potent but by now we didn’t care & were loving the whole experience!!!

Must Visit Vong Wong!!!

We were there for a good 3 hours and loved every moment of it! After that I rode back with Ekta which was an absolutely amazing experience  we also switched between who was riding across Marine Drive as that feeling was totally surreal. Also before I sign off, let me very highly & strongly recommend Vong Wong to all; if you like super yummy food & cocktails with a dash of an awesome experience then you must must visit this place. Finally do check out the slide show below, it has some awesome visuals which to us are like a full-on spiritual trip!!!

The Weekend , Bike Ride & Food Update

Sausage & Meat Yummmyness!!!

Goo!

This weekend was pretty crazy, with a lot of things happening beyond the normal R & C (resting & chilling). Beyond thee pictures attached, do also check out the slide show below for all the brilliant & yummy pictures. Started off the same early Friday afternoon, wherein post work from our fort office, Vishal & I decided to head to Mocambo’s which is a restaurant opposite our office and have a few pints. Reached there, zeroed in on Miller, which we had drunk in Goa, though now the same was in Bombay so happiness happened! We had a few pints; from there, we decided to head to Kobe’s for lunch. Mihir & Rachita also joined us for lunch. Sizzlers were had which were pretty awesome – Sausage Sizzler, Hamburger Steak Sizzler & Nasi goreng which is a rice based Sizzler were devoured. Post this, we finished some work and then were going to crash at our relevant homes. Please note, Ekta wasn’t there as she was in Sanpada and post that was heading to Baroda. In the evening, I got a call from Ekta saying she is not going to Baroda and that she will be going the next day on her bike… Full on drinking session happened post that with Rum & beer, post which we passed out. Ekta got up the next day by 4:00 a.m. and left for Baroda.

Basilico

Miller!!!

Saturday morning started off with deciding a brunch date with the Mrs. We decided to go to Colaba & then figure a place to go and eat. Post loitering across Colaba Causeway we decided to go to Basilico. Reached Basilico by 11:30 a.m., the place was pretty empty. Rachita ordered a Ginger Cooler & I had some Orange Pekoe Tea (Yup! I had tea, as Basilico doesn’t serve Alcoholic Beverages); also by then we had called Anushka & asked her to join us. While waiting for her, we ordered a Cajun Chicken Salad which was superb! Once Anushka aka Anus arrived, we bitched about a lot of general things and then ordered some Chicken & Steak for our mains. Also ordered some insanely yummy Pizza & finally ended the leisurely brunch with a New York Syle Cheese Cake. For those who don’t know the difference between Philedelphia & New York Cheesecake, Philly is Baked while NY is steamed :-). The afternoon was spent sleeping, woke up and then went for an awesome bike ride past Marine Drive & Nariman Point, got home & figured Rachita had made some awesome burritos for dinner. The dinner spread was awesome – there was sour cream, guacamole, salsa, refried beans & tortilla’s for dinner. Also to top all of that, Rachita made some super duper cheesecake (eggless, that too!). Post the crazily awesome dinner, we watched a few episode of Game of Thrones Season 2 & passed out.

Worlds Best Burrito!!!

Baked Cheese Cake!!!

Awesomeness!!!

Sunday morning started off with Astro’s walk, then bath as always. Then there was a session of personal grooming in the bathroom, accompanied by some dhinchak regional music. Played a session of Sleeping Dogs on the Xbox360 with Mihir before heading to the inlaws for brunch. Please to note, Rachita had baked cheesecake for the brunch as well :-). There were some awesome dosas made for brunch which were eaten; again, overate so went home and passed out. Woke up, went for bike ride, which was superb considering Sunday evenings Marine Drive & Nariman Point is always packed with people so sights & sounds were ever so intresting. Came home, played NBA2k12 & UFC Undisputed on the Xbox360 while listening to some Blues & Jazz by Muddy Waters, BB King & Eric Clapton. Dinner was some chinese ordered from China Gate at Atria Mall. On the ordered list was some Hunan Wanton Soup, Crispy Fried Potatoes, Burnt Garlic Pot Rice, Shezwan Mein foon (Rice noodles), Sui Mai & Stir Fried Chinese Greens. Post dinner, watched some UFC on Sony Six & finally ended the day with a few episodes of Game of Thrones season 2. Woke up Monday morning, realized the weather was good and went for a bike ride & some photagraphy which is featured in the slide show below. All in all, a great weekend which has set a precedence for the others to come 😉

Bike Ride Revisited, Cookies & Pizzas

Sensational Marine Drive

Our Black Beauty!!!

Saturday started off with a rare and early morning bike ride… Rare basis the rains wherein this time around in the country it is the monsoon season & thus due to consistent rains in the city, bike rides are few & far between. There are people who do ride in the rains, though Mihir & I totally refrain from the same….. to each his own, I say… Coming back to the bike ride – an amazing feeling when you just start the engine, put the bike into gear and start cruising; somehow, even after a break you just feel like the bike is a part of you and the feeling is unmatched. A bit like cycling – you never forget how to ride it 🙂 .

Fortunately, the weather was kind…… actually, the weather was spectacular….. roads were dry, nice wind, the sun was under a cloud cover & all that jazz. Started by riding through my lane & then ventured to ride towards Worli Seaface. Passing Peddar Road & then Haji Ali which is my most favorite stretch to ride past was an amazing feeling, then went upto Worli Seaface where the wind was strong & at times felt the push of the same across the bike. From there, decided to go back as there was a slight drizzle which had started, though by the time I reached the Race Course, the weather was clear again. Decided to then continue the feeling of non stop riding & rode towards Marine Drive which was super awesome! Went to Nariman Point & back home. The brilliance of open roads matched only with the experiance of riding next to the sea was super cool!!!

Yummmyyyyy!!!

Awesome Cookies Courtesy the Mrs!!!

Got home, finished morning chores and then decided to head out for lunch with Mihir, Rachita, Yooti & Mother-in-law a.k.a. JKD. The cuisine to be eaten was Chinese & the place agreed upon was Asia 7 at the Palladium,  Phoniex Mills. Went there did a bit of window shopping & then went and ate some awesome food. Had some raw Papaya Salad, soup which had a distinct thai flavour (coconut milk base), some awesome mushroom starter followed by Rice & some Vegeteable Gravy. The place is a bit steep but definitely worth a visit. Went home & crashed. Though, while I was asleep, the very lovely Mrs baked some awesome cookies; woke up to sensational visuals & smells of the same. Cookies were vanilla, Chocolate & Chocolate with a soft center of Chocolate Truffles… Also Yooti had made some great Apple & Orange Sangria which was drunk through the evening by Vishal, Mihir & yours truly :-). The brilliant evening was then ended with Tacos and the Chocolate soft center Truffle Cookie for Dessert. Also, watched the animated movie Arjun which is a Disney movie though made by Indian companies like Tata Elixi & Reliance. The movie’s look & feel was breathtaking & the story captivating. I highly recommend the same to all.

More Yummyness!!!

Pesto & Jalapeno Pizza!!!

Stuffed Crust Pizza!!!

Sunday started off with Astro’s walk, bath & breakfast, post which the day was spent lying on bed watching movies. Saw a movie called The Philly Kid to start the day, loved the tag line of the film which said “To be out he had to be in”. The movie on the whole was decent & worth a watch. 2nd movie watched was Hijacked, starring UFC legend Randy “The Natural” Courture….. total wall paper movie which had its moments :-). Also ordered some wood-oven pizzas from this local joint called Govinda which is a restaurant run by the ISKON Hare Rama Hare Krishna Trust. The food was decent, though my suggestions if you ever order from there please re-heat the pizzas before eating… Finally, to end the amazing weekend, saw The Journey to The Mysterious Island starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Full on on entertainment movie. After that saw an episode of True Blood and finally passed out…

The Bike ride around Home

Amazing!

This weekend’s ride started the way like any other, fairly straightforward around Marine Drive and back again; while on my way back, I realised I needed to pick up some Peach Nectar to make Peach Sangria later in the evening. So I rode towards Grant Road Station and soon enough realized that the area near my house is also a great place to ride and take pictures.

En route to the Station!

Construction at Nana Chowk

Cobbler Outside Our Lane.

General Notice – Riders who are afraid of narrow streets, please do not come to this vicinity; on the other hand, if you like photography, some amazing shots are there for you to capture. Back to me now, I started by parking my bike and walking across Grant Road vegetable market. The place gets mad crowded even as early at 8:00 a.m. in the morning. Once I picked up the juice, I decided to take a detour and move from the back lane of the station towards Tardeo, from where I exited and came back towards Nana Chowk. Around Nana Chowk is where they are constructing a sky walk which will lead straight to the station. My curiosity got the better of me. I parked my bike, took the camera and climbed up the Skywalk. The first thing I noticed is how clean it is, next that it is a fairly long walk towards the station. Anyways, I kept moving forward taking pictures. After a while I reached the station; surprisingly, the skywalk started to shake as I got close. At this point, I am thinking Earthquake, but a passerby informed me that the walkway vibrates a bit when trains pass by. I walked back towards my bike and moved on; next on my list was Mani Bhavan and the by lanes around the house.

Rumbling Skywalk!

.

Off Mani Bhawan

Mani Bhavan, the residence place of Mahatma Gandhi is in the street next to where I live. I have moved up and down these lanes for 30 years now. The buildings have an old world charm that is hard to find nowadays. If you are around Gamdevi, be sure to explore the lanes, I took a few pictures of Mani Bhavan and then moved towards Kennedy Bridge which has an awesome view of the Old Gamdevi (we call it that….. it’s not really that old). Note the drive is fairly challenging, as beyond narrow streets, you are also avoiding people shopping and kids playing cricket J. Once on the bridge, I got off to take a few shots. At that time a bunch of school kids saw my bike – they were very fascinated with the customization and requested if I could show them if the Iron Eagle lights up. Of course, I happily obliged and left them smiling. After all this excitement, I went back home to watching movies. In the evening, the beautiful Mrs made us Peach Sangria, do note I got very high after 3 glasses! Post that, Rachita, my sister-in-law, cooked us some unbelievable Pasta, followed by a Peach Crumble for dessert. To round it all up, a Saturday well spent.

Temple around the residence…

When I look back on the entire day, I believe the sights and sounds I saw around my house were very fascinating; I would strongly suggest this to anyone, the important part is you need to change your mindset while walking around areas you have a million times. Think about it like a tourist and the amount of things you will notice will surprise you.

Total Awesomeness!!!

For all my alcoholic friends here is the recipe for the Absolute Amazing Peach Sangria! Enjoy!

  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle rosé wine
  • 3/4 cup vodka
  • 1/2 cup peach nectar
  • 6 tablespoons thawed frozen lemonade concentrate
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 pound ripe peaches, peeled and sliced
  • 1 (6-oz.) package fresh raspberries
  • 2 cups club soda, chilled

.

.

Preparation

  1. Combine the first 5 ingredients in a pitcher; stir until sugar is dissolved. Stir in peaches and raspberries. Cover and chill for 8 hours.
  2. Stir in chilled club soda just before serving.
  3. Peach-flavored vodka may be substituted. In that case, omit the peach nectar.
  4. 1 cup frozen raspberries may be substituted or omitted.

Fringe Science

Fringe science is scientific inquiry in an established field of study that departs significantly from mainstream or orthodox theories, and is classified in the “fringes” of a credible mainstream academic discipline. Mainstream scientists typically regard fringe concepts as highly speculative or even strongly refuted. So why am I writing about this highly debatable field? One reason is that all popular TV DVDs are out due to rains in Mumbai limiting time on the bike. Next, is to introduce people to some of the crazy TV that we watch. Do expect a lot of series’ to be covered in the next few months.

A couple of months back, Yooti and I had just finished watching Mad Men, the popular television serial, and were debating which sitcom to watch next. After doing some research on IMBD no conclusive decision was reached – anyways we still went to the DVD shop – once there I kept staring at the large collection of popular TV series’ available. This time around I was clearly looking for the sci-fi genre, the sales man recommended Super Natural and Fringe. In the interest of saving some money, I picked up Fringe (only 2 seasons at that time as compared to 6 in Supernatural – it is a separate discussion that I did end up buying Supernatural later). We had lunch and went home after that. Later that night we started watching Fringe, after watching the pilot episode we both arrived at the same conclusion….this is probably one of the best shows we have seen in a while. Here is the trailer introducing Season 1.

Created by J. J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the series follows the lives and cases of the Fringe Division, a Task Force supported primarily by the FBI; the team includes Agent Olivia Dunham, Dr. Walter Bishop and Peter Bishop. They are supported by Phillip Broyles and Agent Astrid Farnsworth, who assists Walter. The Fringe Division investigates cases ranging from transhumanist experiments gone wrong to the prospect of a destructive technological of singularity. They are supported by the members of a company called “Massive Dynamics” – Nina Sharp and William Bell. What makes this sitcom different from others like the X-Files is the meticulous characterization of the cast and the storyline; each episode can be watched as a standalone piece of content, but all 24 come together to reveal a plot that just boggles the mind!

Fringe actually has you questioning and debating episodes much after you have finished watching them – Walter Bishop’s character played by John Noble is unforgettable. Referred to as “The Einstien of our generation”  the character is funny, smart, eccentric and definitely the driving force behind each and every episode.  For all of you who don’t know who John Noble is – he played Denethor in The Lord of the Rings – he is also Artistic Director of Stage Company of South Australia 1977–8, head of Drama, Brent St. School of Arts (Sydney) 1997-00, has directed over 80 plays, including ‘Sons of Cain’ on London’s West End (1986), a freelance actor. Semi-regular in TV series ‘All Saints’ and a Voice and Acting Teacher.

Fringe is a DVD turner! Once you start watching it will take every bit of your will power to press the stop button on your player – an absolute must watch for people who enjoy science fiction. I am currently watching season 4 and some of the theories are out of whack! If you are already a fan, there are a bunch of comics published by DC that are prequel to the series and a must read…a word of advice, the series has a way of taking over your life……Finally check the image for the glyph keys as shown in various episodes of the sitcom – let me know if anyone has a solution out there….

For die hard fans, here is the opening sequance with the absolutely haunting theme.

General Chilling Weekend

So there has been no update basis the weekend. This weekend’shappenings and the delay is totally because we had the NBA Playoffs happeningand also that post went up on priority. Having said that, the weekend was totallyawesome and spent with friends and family. The details for the same are mentioned – do have a read as they not only include bike rides, drinking and coolstuff, but also some awesome burritos & cheesecake happenings!

Nariman Point

King Fisher Ultra Time!!!

Awesome Beer Glass!!!

Started off on Friday, more or less planning Friday, as there were friends going to be over and the evening was planned around alcohol and general chilling. Saturday started off with a bike ride past Nariman Point, through Marine Drive also went in & around kemps corner, peddar road and mahalakshmi.Got home and finished the mundane chores and then spent the better half of the day with Rachita ordering food, alcohol & other things required for the party . Please note, Ritika, Suneel, Vishal & Ekta were going to be over forthe party. The best part of living in India is that everything is only a call away; called relevant stores, got veggies delivered home, got bloody mary mixes, philedelphia cheese, nacho chips and all delivered home! Didn’t need to move a muscle! Vishal was kind enough to order the magic box of beers which had 18 Kingfisher Ultras & about 6 Budweisers as Suneel drinks only Bud! Post watching Supernatural & Vampire Diaries Season 3 & a quick nap, 4 was the time by which everyone decided to come over and the party began!!! Started off drinking beers and trying to make sheesha with some bad flavours as the flavours in stock were exhausted… Ritika madesome decently bad sheesha which we had and then moved on to drinking more beers.

Cheese Cake!!!

World Best Nachos!

Post that, got ravenously hungry so Rachita was kind enoughto make us some awesome Tortilla Chips with Cheese Sauce (Nachos)! We got some ready made corn chips from a company called Cornitos and made some cheese sauce at home – killer combination people! You can try the same at your end with Doritos or any other local corn chips available. Also during the beer and sheesha session, Rachita was preparing an awesome cheesecake (check the pictures for the same above). Also dinner was being managed by her which was super bean burritos… Dinner was done which was absolutely sensational & delicious & post that camethe super dessert session which was unreal!!! Then all of us were zoning and decided to call it a night as we were decently high… Sunday morning started with cleaning the bike and sorting the bike cover, etc. as the rains arearound the corner. Decided to watch some D-grade movie called Hate Story which was pleasantly decent, post which most of the day was spent watching Supernatural season 4 which we finished where in Lucifer was being resurrected! Totally awesome, guys! Must watch! Can’t wait to get my hands on season 5.

Sensational Burritos!

Also, as mentioned, started Vampire Diaries season 3 which did turn out to be very interesting. Finally dinner was spent in true gujju style eating Khakhra Sandwich. Khakhra Sandwich is basically made using Roti’s whichare made crisp post double roasting like tortillas and then regular sandwich filling is put between 2 roti’s to make an ultimate khakhra sandwich! Finally, to close an awesome & well rested weekend, Rachita & I watched JohnCarter, which according to us was pretty damn good and closed the weekend…
