Vintage Weekend

This weekend was more or less governed by a lot of activity. Also, I realized that it had been over 2 weeks since I put up a post & much was overdue. This weekend started off with an awesome motorbike ride, then general guitar playing in the morning, post which we (Ekta, Rachita & me) went to Oh! Calcutta & had some awesome seafood – there was fried fish, steamed fish, awesome naans and some superb daal, etc. which was eaten. The evening was spent visiting the super car show at Mahalakshmi racecourse followed by alcohol & home made burgers which were spectacular. Also, what deserves a mention & please to note there will be a more detailed post on the same is the start of our own little business called Out of the Trinket Box – serving awesome cakes, cupcakes & more. Our 1st order delivered is as below “Hulk Cupcakes!”

Sunday morning started off with a bike ride towards Nariman Point, though on the way, parked right opposite the Trident (what used to be The Oberoi) were some awesome Vintage Cars! So I parked my bike next to them, and decided to have a look; post further probing, I realised that the same were gathering there as part of a Vintage Car Rally with over 100 cars taking part so I decided to hang there for a bit & take some pics & videos. After a while, there were a few Royal Enfields & Bajaj Avengers that came in which were also going to be a part of this rally.

Super Awesome

Super Awesome

Saw a few women riders beyond Ekta for the 1st time riding Royal Enfields. There were Cadillacs, Mercedes,  Mini Coopers, Triumphs, Dodges, Aston Martins, Buicks, cars which looked like Archie’s Jalopy, Rolls-Royce & many more. Also, the cool part here was that the accumulated crowd was allowed to go near the cars, see the interiors, click photographs & all without any issue from the owners; some of the owners were more then happy to talk about their cars to the fans inquiring. Later on, once the place was filled with cars & people, there was a roaring sound like thunder which turned everyone’s heads towards Air India building as the sound came from that direction. En route towards the starting point of the rally came in the Harley Riders, only about 3 of them, though they sounded like an army. Immediately, everyone’s attention switched to these awesome bikes. I also checked them out, contemplated in my head a lot about buying one, though then finally got onto my Bajaj Avenger & rode back home. I am going to try & put up images of the rally in a slide show below this post.

Got home all excited, showed Rachita & Mihir the pictures of the rally, spent time with Astro, watched Stargate Atlantis. Also watched a crazy movie called Upsidedown which has an amazing concept – 2 Worlds circulating a single sun with opposite gravitational forces connected to each other, so in effect people in world 1 see the people in world 2 inverted & people cannot travel to opposite worlds otherwise they wont survive for more than 30 minutes, pretty trippy I tell you. Post a full-on family lunch, I passed out for a bit, woke up & decided to go for a random joyride with Rachita towards worli seaface to see the Worli Festival, got home went for a bike ride again past peddar road & marine drive, felt super cool about the same :-), got home had some super JD (Jack Daniels i.e.), ordered-in pizzas & watched a super comedy called Here comes the Boom to end the day and a super weekend. Don’t forget to check the awesome photographs of some crazy vintage cars!!!

Cruisin’ with the right Gear

While we have been talking about bikes, rides, bikers, builders, etc. we haven’t spoken about basic safety gear; so today’s post is dedicated to the same – basic hygiene equipment you have to own while you are riding. This is the moment most of you will think this is a boring post reviewing or selling gears made by some brand, etc. Do not stop reading as clearly this is not one of those posts.

Ideal Attire

They do look Cool!

Helmets are a must because Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone’s Movie) said “I am the Law” & clearly you don’t want to go up against him. Some cool stuff is available in the market as you can see in the pictures. Also if you want more details on the same, do check out our Helmets & More section & the Hardcore Post.

Next, most important tip, keep your pants on, make sure you wear denims or pants – shorts are a no no considering you can burn yourself on the exhaust pipe which is exceedingly close to your leg while the bike is not in motion and also if by chance you skid, friction burns are a bitch! Remember the scene in the movie Torque where the guy in the beginning skids and rolls screaming, “I am burning! I am burning!”, that’s what bitch burns can do. Wearing pants or jeans will not only protect against the bitch burns but also make you look cool! Options are a dime a dozen in the market: Hollister’s, Diesel, Armani, Levis, Lee Cooper, etc. if you have the money; otherwise, like me, jump down to the local imports / 2nd sale / rejects shop and get a cool pair for dirt cheap. I buy mine from Clothes Rack or Apparel Store in South Bombay, just of Cumballa Hill Hospital.

Need to get one of these

Another thing you want to make sure is a wear a good shirt or a t-shirt (in Bombay I don’t recommend Jackets unless the weather permits), I know in movies you see guys wearing ganji’s (vests) or riding bare upper body. Trust me, absolutely and totally avoidable considering the danger of bitch burns; also, from time to time, and if you like riding on open roads like me, then a good idea is to be covered as the wind can translate into a cold before you say Jack Daniels. A good scarf or a piece of cloth while you ride in the city is also a good idea as it safeguards against pollution and also lets you swear at people without them knowing unless you are in a heated argument or brawl :-). Also, if you have long hair you can use the same to tie your hair and on long rides use it like a bandana to avoid a sweaty smelly helmet.

Must Own

A good pair of shoes is a must. If you can get boots, even better, though the no no in this case is chappals, floaters and flip flops; beyond bitch burns the problem with all of the mentioned is that they just do not look or feel cool.Try riding wearing boots…. just the feeling when you mount your bike in boots versus anything else is just so different…after a point anything else feels just simply wrong. I have a pair of Rockford’s in Black & Brown which i use. Boots at local stores are available from as low as Rs 99/- to Rs 9999/- so budget permitting, go get them trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Cruising Time

The last thing which definitely needs a mention is a good pair of shades/glasses. Remember Tom Cruise in Topgun and the Ray Bans? Not only did the same revolutionarize the business of eyewear but also made every Tom, Dick & Harry buy a pair. Also for all you bike fans here’s an interesting piece of info – Tom rode a Kawasaki GPZ 750 900 Ninja in the movie wearing those cool shades.

If you dont have a helmet with a built-in visor then shades/ glasses are an absolute must as without them it is more or less Mission Impossible & I strongly suggest you do not accept the same. Shades on the streets of Bombay are available from Rs. 100/- to about Rs. 1000/- and in stores for all you brand addicts, from Rs 1000/- to 10000/- & upwards. If you don’t own one get a pair or more now! Also, just for the record, the bike used by Tom in Mi2 was a Triumph Speed Triple (an urban bike with a 1L engine) – super awesome!!!

This is why you need Shades

My Favorite Avenger – The Incredible Hulk

I am sure you have guessed this post is about the Hulk, before I get into other details, a quick background on the Greatest Super Hero of All Time –

Few of us know that Doctor Banner’s full name is Robert Bruce Banner. The Dr. was present in the instrumentation bunker at the test site for the first underground test detonation of the Gamma Bomb. Observing that a civilian had breached security and entered the restricted test area, Banner told his colleague Igor Starsky to delay the countdown while he tried to get the civilian to safety. Starsky, secretly a Soviet agent, did nothing, confident that Banner would die in the explosion, bringing the project to a halt. Reaching the civilian, a teenager named Rick Jones, Banner threw him into a protective trench. Before Banner could get himself to safety, the Gamma Bomb detonated, and intense waves of radiation reached the surface. Banner was irradiated with highly charged radioactive particles. Due to an unknown genetic factor in his body, Banner was not killed by the radiation, which instead caused him to frequently transform into the vastly powerful, humanoid monster named “the Hulk” There are various theories on how and why Banner changes into the Hulk the most popular being, he gets “MAD”.  Hulk joining the Avengers was more accidental then planned; he became a pawn of Loki who tricked Hulk into battling his half-brother, Thor. This plot was foiled, leading to Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp joining forces to form the Avengers and defeat Loki.

I have been a fan of the Incredible Hulk since I was a kid; I had one of those stretchy characters who’s arms and legs you could pull, from then on it was about watching The Hulk television series starring the legendary Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby – these  my relatives would send from the US – we did not have cable TV in India back then. It’s been a good 30 years and I am still a fan of Dr. Banner, have pretty much followed all his movies/cartoons, collected figurines, gadgets and so on.

I have always thought the Hulk movies were badly done. Ang Lee’s portrayal was the worst ever, showcasing a retarded Hulk, come on! Ed Norton did a good job of portraying the green monster, but his portrayal of Dr. Banner just did not work. The Avengers saw Ruffalo potray the Hulk; his attempt is the best so far even better than Bill Bixby; the character is the way it should be, period (try spotting your favorite Hulk in the image). The Avengers glorifies the Hulk like no other movie, the scene where the good Doctor rides in on his Bike and levels the Leviathan is unreal! I was very fascinated by this scene, purely because I have never seen the Hulk riding bikes, currently there isn’t much clarity on which bike he is riding – the rumor mill is buzzing between Harley Davidson & Triumph, I think it could be the Harley – they have tried up with the movie and also showcased a bike at the LA premiere.

Because we love bikes and the Hulk, I looked around to see how the green monster has inspired bike riders and builders across decades and found some really interesting stuff. Hulk bikes, some completely dedicated to the Goliath and others with minor tributes, also helmets and vinyls a plenty have been created in the great one’s image. Check the images around the blog and the gallery below, I am sure they will inspire you to dedicate your bike or at least some part of it to your favourite super hero. I have also added some of our collection in terms of figurines and gadgets, don’t miss the green cake created by Rachita (sister-in-law) post watching The Avengers. If you know which Bike Dr Banner is riding in the movie, do add your comments and let us know….
